How teams know if something is down

When checkout fails, you need a true signal fast. The market offers three broad approaches. They answer different questions. Mixing them up is how teams spend an hour in the wrong place.

  1. Self-report

The vendor (or you) updates a status page from internal checks and incident process. Useful primary source. Not independent measurement.

  2. Single-vantage (or multi-location) checks

A tool pings a URL on a schedule from one or more locations you configure. Good for "is my endpoint answering?" Limited for "is a third party down for everyone?"

  3. Independent measurement

Someone outside your network and outside the vendor probes the real host and can place that reading next to the vendor's self-report. That is the StackWitness approach for dependencies.

Use the guides below when you are shopping categories, not when you want a hit piece. We describe approaches with stable facts. We do not invent competitor prices, SLAs, or feature lists that go stale.

How to choose

Where StackWitness fits

StackWitness is independent dependency and uptime monitoring with honest status pages. We measure the services you depend on ourselves, from multiple regions, and read the vendor's own status feed alongside, so when something breaks you know within minutes whether it is your provider or you. When our regions disagree, we show it as measured instead of averaging it into a comfortable green.

The paid product gives you your own monitors, clear attribution the moment a third party is the cause, and a customer-facing status page backed by that same measurement. It is the evidence you want in front of customers and your own team at 3am.

Questions

Is this a ranking of every status tool?

No. These pages group options by approach so you can match the job (customer comms, URL checks, independent dependency measurement) without treating marketing claims as measurement.

Do you list competitor prices?

No. Prices and packaged feature lists change. We describe stable approaches. Check each vendor for current pricing.

What does StackWitness actually measure?

We probe public hosts for reachability and read public vendor status feeds. Reachable means the host answered our probe under our rules. It is not a full product audit or a compliance verdict.

Start with evidence you can read. Public dependency truth pages use the same measurement discipline as the paid product.
